{"id":1997,"date":"2019-10-15T14:01:13","date_gmt":"2019-10-15T14:01:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/enc-eu.org\/?p=1997"},"modified":"2019-10-15T14:01:16","modified_gmt":"2019-10-15T14:01:16","slug":"dr-hans-kluge-is-the-nominee-for-who-regional-director-for-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/enc-eu.org\/?p=1997","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Hans Kluge is the nominee for WHO Regional Director for Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On the 17<sup>th<\/sup> of September, Dr. Hans Kluge\nwas nominated as the new WHO Regional Director for Europe at the annual meeting\nof the WHO European Region\u2019s governing body, taking place in Copenhagen,\nDenmark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Kluge, a Belgian national, is currently Director of\nthe Division of Health Systems and Public Health at WHO\/Europe. He was 1 of 6\ncandidates for the post; the others were originating from Armenia, Austria,\nBulgaria, Georgia and Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his address to delegates at the 69th session of the\nWHO Regional Committee for Europe, Dr Kluge pledged to focus on the feedback\nand messages he received from European Member States during his campaign across\nthe Region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Member States\nwant to see an agile WHO\/Europe providing a compass for better health in the\nRegion. They want a very pragmatic toolbox for accelerating the achievement of\nthe Sustainable Development Goals. We have to take into account global health,\nthe regional context, but also countries\u2019 cultural and health system\nspecificities<\/em>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Kluge stressed the importance of partnership, which\nhe considers \u201can ethical duty, not a matter of good will\u201d. He emphasized that\n\u201cWHO\/Europe should walk the talk on the economy of scale, with less expensive\nmeetings and a less top-heavy organigram\u201d. WHO\/Europe has to be cost-effective,\nhe explained \u2013 less is more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>The objective\nis to strengthen WHO\/Europe as a centre of excellence to give concrete help to\ncountries on concrete issues, to work with determination and modesty to\nincrease the impact at the country level, and to decrease the burden on\ncountries \u2013 not least the small countries<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For WHO\/Europe, his priority is to establish a\nparticipatory approach with staff based on the WHO values charter and to\neradicate harassment.<br>\n\u201cThe road is long, the mountains are steep, the instruments are few, but the\nsolidarity is great,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After this nomination, Dr. Kluge\u2019s candidacy will be\nsubmitted for the consideration of the WHO Executive Board at its 146th session\nin February 2020. Dr. Hans Kluge is scheduled to take up the new post on 1<sup>st<\/sup>\nFebruary 2020. He will succeed Dr. Zsuzsanna Jakab, who served as Regional\nDirector for the past 10 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Biographical note<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Kluge has been active in public health for 24\nyears. He started his career as a family doctor in Belgium and served for\nM\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res in Liberia and Somalia. He worked on large-scale\ntuberculosis programmes in prison systems in Siberia and several countries of\nthe former Soviet Union. At the WHO Regional Office for South-East Asia, he was\nresponsible for tuberculosis, AIDS and malaria programmes in the Democratic\nPeople\u2019s Republic of Korea and Myanmar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the last decade at WHO\/Europe, Dr Kluge engaged in\nlarge-scale system transformations, including the introduction of\ncommunity-based primary health care in Greece during the financial crisis, the\nimplementation of the Tallinn Charter, and the advancement of commitments\nadopted at the Global Conference on Primary Health Care in Astana, Kazakhstan,\nin 2018.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On the 17th of September, Dr. Hans Kluge was nominated as the new WHO Regional Director for Europe at the annual meeting of the WHO European Region\u2019s governing body, taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark.
