The release of the report was planned by WHO to coincide with the 2020 International Year of the Nurse and Midwife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img src=\"http:\/\/enc-eu.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/the-state-of-the-worlds-nursing-2020-cover.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2048\" width=\"359\" height=\"507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/enc-eu.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/the-state-of-the-worlds-nursing-2020-cover-213x300.png 213w, https:\/\/enc-eu.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/the-state-of-the-worlds-nursing-2020-cover.png 479w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 359px) 100vw, 359px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The WHO report\ndescribes how the nursing workforce is helping to deliver Universal Health\nCoverage (UHC) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and highlight\nareas for policy development for the next three to five years. It also provides\na technical description of the nursing workforce in Member States, including the\nnumber and types of nurses, education, regulation, practice, leadership, and\ngender issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Written by\nthe World Health Organization (WHO) in partnership with the International\nCouncil of Nurses (ICN) and Nursing Now, the report placed the global nurse\nheadcount at 28 million, with a shortage of 5.9 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking\nduring a press conference to mark the release, British nurse peer and co-chair\nof the report, Baroness Mary Watkins, declared that this was the \u201c<em>most comprehensive set of data that we have\never had about the state of the world\u2019s nursing<\/em> \u201c.
